As I lost the previous writing for week2 I had to write
again and I have forgotten what I wrote before.
Adventure travel is still popular with people of all age.
Many people want to experience different tastes of cultures around the world. Tintin
is brave and moral. Also he never grows up. This hero is an imaginary in real
world. This genre can come close to readers easily.
From my experience, there was
no doubt that cartoons are for only children in the last two decades, past,
however, nowadays as readers approach to cartoons closely, the fixed idea and
stereotypes we hold are being broken. Cartoons, now are for every generation. Tintin
was loved by children and adults as Far(1991) stated that this cartoon was
targeting all young people aged from seven to seventy-seven. In my opinion, although
Tintin is marked as children’s comics they would have been too young to
understand the concepts about races. The invaders,Japanese would be seemed to readers,
especially to children as pigs and evil. Evil Japs is a case in point. Having the
fact that Japanese are invaders but only few adults would really think Japanese
are pigs. On the other hand, the film would be very approachable to children as
the story goes faster than the books. The hero in film is muscular as children
think heroes are strong to save others but in cartoon Tintin is as skinny as Chinese
who introduce a town.

Hey Za,
ReplyDeleteI liked your opinion on how children wouldn’t understand the concepts of races that is presented in Tintin. I do agree that children would see Japanese people as pigs and evil from the way they are portrayed in the both the comic and the film ‘The Blue Lotus’. I think that the children who have seen or read the comic or the film would grow up having it in the back or their minds that Japanese people are evil.
Just a random question I thought I might ask lol... When you were a kid was there anything that made you think that another culture or race were bad because they were portrayed as bad people in anything that you watched or read as a kid?
Thanks for reply, firstly answer to your question, I was interested in the world history rather than knowing precisely my country's history as I thought that even with 5000years of civilization we did not invade or overtake countries, it was just boring. but since I hit 20 in Auckland I tried to know Korean history more deeply( i had general ideas ). to take an example the latest war was the Korean war between North and South. when I was like 8-9ish old i remember that in art class i had to drow north koreans at that time i thought they look like mad dogs. on the other hand In north korea, the systematic indoctrination of anti- Americanism starts as early as kindergarden and is as much a part of the curriculum as learning.
DeleteWow that's really interesting. I'm trying to think of how I viewed any other culture or race as bad if I ever read or watched it as a kid. Unfortunately, nothing really comes to mind right now lol. Thanks for sharing that :)
DeleteHello Za Muka,
ReplyDeleteI agree with your opinion. I also believe that cartoon such as Tintins is not only aimed for children but for adults as well. Tintin contain a lot of political issues that remained in the past, and to use your example, the Japanese. The author have decribed the Japanese as evil. I persoanlly think that Tintin can be enjoyed by all readers regardless of audience's age.
Yes daehun I agree. It does not matter for children if they dont understand political issues but only one thing i concern is children are easy to be influenced by media even adults can be controled by media. but still children can enjoy heroic movie and I think adults can enjoy both comic and politics
DeleteTintin, for children's view would be a little superhero's adventure and saving the saving the world. For adult’s view it is more likely to focus on political and irreverent of many topic in society for example the underground focusing on the drug world.
