How does Buffy deconstruct traditional literary notions of good and evil?

How does Buffy deconstruct traditional literary notions of good and evil?

Traditionally or religiously the notion of good and evil can be distinguished by that bad people will go to hell and good people will go to heaven. Perhaps the Buffy as a person, she is good. However as looking through her life, she isn’t a good one. Braun (2000), It was season 2, it was called "Innocence". Angel experienced a true moment of happiness when he and Buffy had sex, and because of that, his curse was broken.Buffy the Vampire Slayer” broke the traditional notion of good and evil. Probably Angel is a big factor in that.

When people like the contras between the two, it’s just a matter of awareness. Has nothing to do with "back sliding" as much as it has to do with the denial of human experience that serves a purpose. Attitudes toward good and evil are very rigorous and unbending.

  1. Hey Soyoun,

I really like your blog post on your question. I definitely don’t think that Buffy would be seen as a good because of her position as a vampire slayer and basing it on the whole series of Buffy. "Good", meaning that she does nothing wrong and she is perfect, which she’s not. The series of Buffy overall shows her struggles of growing up and having a huge responsibility, and of course there is so much pressure on her being the vampire slayer it’s her job to try be good. Faith, on the other hand (the 2nd vampire slayer) could be seen as bad because she actually kills people and doesn’t care. I don’t think Buffy has ever killed a person but there was an episode that someone made her think she had killed a person and she clearly felt guilty about it. Going back to Faith, she does kill people but then when she moves to the “Angel” series she actually seeks redemption for what she has done. I don’t think that any of the characters in Buffy could be seen as good overall but I think if people do something bad it doesn’t mean they’re going straight to hell. It’s more of how we fix it and if we try to redeem ourselves by wanting to change.
